<image:title>Team Updates - Mark your calendar for the Michigan Sun Run! - The Official Route has arrived!</image:title>
<image:caption>On July 23rd, the Michigan Sun Run will begin in Princeton, NJ, and our Race Crew will drive Aevum 3,000 miles across the country. Along the way, we will be hosting four events with partner locations in New Jersey, Kansas, New Mexico, and California. So, mark your calendars and invite your friends and family out for the day to see the car. We’d love to see you there! Also, if you stay long enough, you’ll be able to watch Aevum depart from the location and resume its journey on the Michigan Sun Run. Now wouldn’t that be cool to see? More information about our route can be found on our website. For the states that don't have an official event planned, there will be other opportunities to see the car pass by on the road.</image:caption>

<image:title>Team Updates - Mark your calendar for the Michigan Sun Run! - Meet our 2022 Race Crew!</image:title>
<image:caption>With majors ranging from economics to aerospace engineering, 20 undergraduate students were selected from the team to build and drive Aevum in the Michigan Sun Run. Their vast skill sets allow our team to push the limits of what is possible in all aspects of solar racing. And we can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer has in store for them. In addition to being dedicated engineers, strategists, and business members, they are also life-long musicians, Formula 1 fans, and everything in between. Read their biographies on our website to learn more about the minds behind Aevum, the Michigan Sun Run, and our team!</image:caption>

<image:title>Team Updates - Mark your calendar for the Michigan Sun Run! - Caution: Solar vehicle ahead!</image:title>
<image:caption>Driving Aevum on the streets is completely different from driving it on a race track. You have to constantly watch out for road obstructions, weather conditions, and the occasional rogue driver. That’s why the team is taking Aevum out for longer drives around the state to practice caravan procedures before our mock race and the Michigan Sun Run. On the road, our outfitted vehicles aren’t hard to spot, especially our wonderful new trailer built and wrapped by Featherlite Trailers. So, if you’re around Ann Arbor, you might get lucky and see our caravan vehicles drive by this weekend!</image:caption>

<image:caption>On June 10th, our 2022 Race Crew unveiled Aevum to the rest of the world. As the first solar car the team has built since 2019, we’re grateful for the continued support we’ve received from our sponsors, alumni, and team. Thank you to those who were able to attend our Unveil and to everyone who has been a supporter of the team over the past few years and beyond! After applying sunscreen and drinking water, everyone was buzzing with excitement as they walked over to the nearest parking lot. Here, our drivers ran through a slalom course and drove a few laps around the lot. Following closely behind was our Chase driver in a GMC Sierra 2500 provided by Toyota & Subaru of Ann Arbor! The drive went quite smoothly, and now, we’re gearing up to test Aevum and the rest of the main caravan even further on the proving grounds.</image:caption>

<image:title>Team Updates - The solar car drives! - Aevum vs. The Wind</image:title>
<image:caption>While we try our best to optimize the car’s aerodynamics using CFD, it can be hard to align expectations with reality when human error is at play. That’s why several Race Crew members took Aevum over to Stellantis’ Aero-Acoustic Wind Tunnel to validate our data! Given that the tunnel is used to seeing large commercial vehicles and other racing cars, there were some creative liberties taken to secure Aevum to the wheel mounts. Needless to say, everyone quickly got acquainted with the floor and Aevum’s underbody. Watching Aevum withstand speeds over 60mph at different angles without any deformations was a memorable experience, and we’re thankful for the continued support that Stellantis has given us in our wind tunnel tests.</image:caption>

<image:caption>While Race Crew tries to get a reasonable amount of sleep, everyone pitched in extra hours this week to make Aevum’s aerobody as smooth as possible. It was a late night of sanding and bonding in the workspace, but we were able to finish up just in time for the sunrise on Sunday morning. Now, with our mechanical and electrical systems in place, Aevum is off to be wrapped and photographed around campus. In the next newsletter, you’ll be able to see Aevum in all its glory!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Even after three years, Electrum is still road ready! Driving a solar car is a difficult task, but several Race Crew members were eager to get tested to become Aevum’s driver. Not only do our drivers need to be able to make quick adjustments and communicate efficiently with the main caravan vehicles, they also need to be able to tolerate the heat for hours at a time! While Michigan weather isn’t the same as the Australian Outback, the ability to stay sane in the solar car is a must-have for any driver. Our caravan drivers have also started driving in formation and practicing race procedures. As temperatures start to rise alongside the humidity, it's lucky that their vehicles will have AC.</image:caption>

<image:title>Team Updates - This is the start of an unforgettable summer - Here comes the sun</image:title>
<image:caption>The Michigan Sun Run is solar racing’s newest challenge. This 3,000 mile-long endurance race across the country follows the course of the sun from East to West. Starting in New York City, the University of Michigan Solar Car Team will race a solar car across the country to reach the finish line in Los Angeles. The country’s vast geography will push the boundaries of sustainable technology and our capabilities as a solar racing team. This cross-country race is the longest route we have ever raced on, and its outcome will inform our approach to the design and manufacture of our future cars. For more information on the race, visit the Michigan Sun Run website page where the latest news and updates will be posted.</image:caption>

<image:title>Team Updates - This is the start of an unforgettable summer - Going Up North for the summer</image:title>
<image:caption>Construction season is currently underway in Michigan, and we’ve accepted the challenge of avoiding all the pothole-littered roads for our mock race in July. In the past week, our strategy division planned a route throughout the entire state of Michigan and personally drove Up North to survey the roads! This mock race will simulate racing conditions from the World Solar Challenge and prepare us for the Michigan Sun Run. <image:title>1993</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1993, the University of Michigan Solar Car Team won its second American championship in solar racing. Twenty-one years later, the team met together once again with the championship car, Maize and Blue, now located at The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois. “It was an awesome blast from the past to see everyone, the car, and some real surprises that others brought with them,” said Furqan Nazeeri, project manager of the 1993 Maize and Blue team. Furqan organized the reunion and had a great time meeting up with his colleagues. Former team members had brought along their national championship trophy, newspaper articles, team uniforms, and “best of all, photo albums with hundreds of memories.” Team members ecstatically described their vehicle to their families and friends. For many of them, it was the first time in 21 years that they were able to handle the vehicle they built. When Andy Warner, crew chief for Maize and Blue, lifted the car’s canopy, Andrew Walberer, another 1993 alumna, exclaimed “I couldn’t believe Andy let us touch the car!” Maize and Blue finished first in the 1993 SunRayce (now known as the North American Solar Challenge), but experienced problems with their high-powered solar array at the 1993 World Solar Challenge which led to an 11th place finish. The car was revolutionary to the team as it was the first Michigan solar car to be entirely designed using computer software. Many former members shared the belief that they need to start having reunions more often than once every 20 years. “The bonds we formed on that team persist in a way that is hard to explain,” Walberer said. “It was so great to see Furqan and other members of the team reunite and share their work with friends and family. They even had a Google Hangout with a few teammates who couldn’t make it to the reunion and were able to show those members the car.” “I’m glad we all got to connect,” Furqan said, “even if virtually!” Our current team members look forward to our own reunion in the future and we hope to be able to proudly show our friends and family the car that we plan on building for the upcoming World Solar Challenge!</image:caption>

<image:title>2022 - NO DAYS OFF.</image:title>
<image:caption>Engineered with the open road in mind, Aevum’s high-performance battery architecture is our thesis to the credibility of solar-powered vehicles in extended operation. Despite a battery capacity 15 times smaller than consumer market EVs, Aevum can match the range of its mainstream counterparts with ease—even without the help of its solar array.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6044fb0d9016994088a3c935/0f347d60-b200-4130-8ab4-75bb114a2ee2/IMG_4813.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>2022 - ARRAY: RENEWED & EXPANDED.</image:title>
<image:caption>Efficient. Durable. Compact. For years, these qualities have made Gallium Arsenide the photovoltaic standard in solar racing. However, GaAs is not without its faults—the material is highly toxic to dispose and its sky-high price tag presents an often insurmountable barrier of entry for many. Which is why this year, the team has returned to using a traditional silicon array, such that our actions may better match our vision. Nonetheless, with a 50% increase compared to Electrum, Aevum enjoys the greatest and most comprehensive array coverage out of any of our recent solar cars.</image:caption>
